New jailbreak brings iOS love back

04 Feb

So today we have the new Jailbreak by the evad3ers (download it here) and I feel like I got some brand new Apple idevices.

It’s really easy to use. It will require you to press the icon on the screen while its jailbreaking but other than that its the same as the jb’s in the past.

Now if we can just get installous back we’d be in business.

Solavei sim card in iPad

04 Oct

Ok, so I decided ATT can kiss my A## because even though I give them $200 a month they wont upgrade my iPhone to the 5 because of the new policy of no early upgrade before 18 months.

I ended up getting Solavei service for $49 a month with unlimited talk, text, and internet. Up until tonight I’ve been happy with the service but after tonight I’m extremely happy.

I was having a discussion about the service and the subject of iPad data came up and I said I haven’t tried the sim card in my iPad. So we decided to try it out. We inserted the Solavei sim card and it just read “searching” so I figured it didn’t work but to my surprise after about 2 minutes the service in the upper left hand corner read “Solavei E” meaning it connected to edge service through Solavei.

To make a long story short I get to cancel my iPad service with ATT too. Since I don’t use data on my iPad that often I’ll just insert the sim card when I need it. :)

ATT wont upgrade iPhone 4s to iPhone 5 … I’m taking my service to Solavei

ATT wont upgrade iPhone 4s to iPhone 5 … I’m taking my service to Solavei

The only reason I’ve stayed with ATT is because I get iPhones cheap every year.

Pros for ATT

1) iPhone

Cons for ATT

1) Poor service. I drop so many calls a day it seems normal to have poor service.

2) Horrible customer service.

3) Expensive. My bill is over $200 a month for 2 iPhones and an old talk only phone.

4) No upgrade this year. I purchased the iPhone 4s on release day Oct 2011 and I cannot get the new iPhone 5 til 18 months.

My sister has been telling about this company she’s promoting Solavei so I guess I’m going to give it a shot. $49 a month for talk, text and internet. It’s really cheap plus when people sign up using my name I get a discount on my service. Solavei doesn’t give subsidized pricing for phones so they don’t charge ridiculous prices for service and no contract or credit check.

If I don’t get the iPhone 5 then ATT doesn’t get my $200 a month.

Installation and review Viper 5704 and VSM50BT Bluetooth Smartstart

25 Aug

Today I installed the Viper 5704 Responder LC3 SuperCode SST 2-Way Security and Remote Start System5704V with the VSM50BT Bluetooth Smartstart in our 2003 Chevrolet Silverado shop truck. It’s a pretty involved installation. So I decided to take a break and write about the progress.

I’ve done a lot of Viper and Directed Electronics installations in the past but this one has more connections than any of the other alarm installs I’ve done. It actually had more wires than any alarm any brand I’ve ever installed including the old Hofco, Alpine 8080 / 8081, Derringer / Quantam, or any of the old school alarms that came with a crap load of wire.

I’m still having some technical difficulties with getting the SmartStart to activate with an iPhone 4S. After the installation I programmed the iPhone but it just wouldn’t pair. So I tried an iPad and was able to get the iPad to pair and send the signal to the VSM50BT but I was unable to get it to activate the remote start or locks. I can tell the module is getting the signal because the blue light activates when I press any buttons of the iPhone it just wont activate any of the functions.

The 5704 install was pretty straight forward I just needed a Xpress kit passlock II bypass and without the Smartstart it works well. There just isn’t much info on the VSM 50BT on the internet.

So far the greatest advantage of the Bluletooth Smartstart is that there’s no monthly charge like the VSM 250 or the VSM200. I’m tired of getting nickeled and dimed with monthly charges.

I’m going to take another crack at getting the bluetooth smartstart programming. I believe that’s where the problem is. If you have any input or guesses please feel free to leave a comment.

iPhone 4s 4g vs 3g comparison

4g vs 3g comparison

Apple released iOS 5.1 yesterday and besides the normal bug fixes it allows the iPhone 4s to showthe 4G HSPA+ network indicator. Below are the pics of the comparisons.

Before the update with the AT&T 3G service I was getting 3.29 Mbps and 3.09 Mbps with the speedtest.net app from the itunes store.

After the update to 4G I started getting 5.85 Mbps and 5.06 Mbps.

Notice the 4G in the upper left hand corner.

I’m not sure if these numbers will keep up but the data seems to be significantly faster now. The tests were done about an hour apart in the same location, but I drove around a few Southern California cities with my iPhone and it showed consistently faster speeds then it has had in the past. Apple may have actually gotten this update right! Too bad I lost my jailbreak.

AT&T’s official statement is:

“Apple has updated its iOS software to show a 4G network indicator when customers are on AT&T’s 4G network. Only AT&T’s network lets iPhone 4S download 3 times faster and only AT&T customers have access to the nation’s largest 4G network covering nearly 250 million people.”

Some people are claiming its not any faster than it already was but clearly mine was faster… ymmv. It’s still not as fast as it should be but it seems to be a step in the right direction. I hope it isn’t just a coincidence the data speeds were faster today after the update.

iPhone 4S Tips and Tricks

15 Oct

Please let me know what tips and tricks you have for iPhone 4s.

Here’s my first.

Update Facebook status with Siri. I was kind of bummed when I got my new iPhone4s and I couldn’t use Siri to update my Facebook status. So after playing with it for a day I figured out I can update it with Siri using text messages.

Go to http://www.facebook.com/mobile/ and add Facebook text messages. After you sign up add the number they send you to contacts and put the first name as “Facebook” and the last name as “Status” then you can use Siri t0 update Facebook status.

This should work for other apps like twitter also.

Funny things to ask Siri on your iPhone 4s

15 Oct

So I’ve had the new iPhone4s for about a day now and I’ve been talking to it like its my secretary. I asked it to tell me a joke and it starts with “two iPhones walk into a bar” so I started cracking up. Do you have any other funny things to say to your iPhone?

Cydia and Safari crash on iPhone 4 firmware 4.3.3

09 Aug

I was trying to jailbreak an iPhone 4 that had 4.3.3 firmware but it’s been a little while since my last jailbreak. After finding a lot of different info I went ahead and did it again. After finishing the jailbreak Cydia and Safari didn’t work.

When pressing the cydia and safari icon it would just crash. I found the problem was that I was actually using firmware 4.3.2 because I used Redsn0w 9.6 rc 14. After updating to 9.6 rc16 and using firmware 4.3.3 everything worked.

So to make a long story short. If you want to use firmware 4.3.3 you have to use Redsn0w 9.6 rc16 and firmware 4.3.3.
